Brookfield Conservation Commission

The Brookfield Conservation Commission, along with Brookfield Parks & Recreation, maintains the Williams-Gurski Open Space, a 200-acre property featuring five miles of walking trails located in the historic center of Brookfield. Townspeople of all ages should be able to enjoy this lovely forest preserve, which is criss-crossed by old stone walls and opens onto fields at the top of one of Brookfield's highest ridges. They should also feel free to explore its brooks and streams and discover the great variety of birds and animals that make their homes within the park boundaries. Not many New England towns can boast a 200 acre park that is centrally located within walking distance of hundreds of private homes, 3 schools, a library and a national historic district. For a trail map, or further information, please contact the Brookfield Parks & Recreation Department at (203)775-7310, or the Conservation Commission at (203)740-7523.

The Parks and Recreation Department organizes many year-round activities including instruction in art, crafts, horseback riding , aerobics and sports. Day and overnight trips are also featured. During the summer, the department offers swimming lessons and playground programs for children, a day camp, and instructional clinics for baseball, basketball, soccer and tennis. Adult athletic programs and league sports are also offered. In winter, town- sponsored trips to area ski facilities are scheduled on a regular basis.

Brookfield Library

THE BROOKFIELD LIBRARY

The Brookfield Library is open seven days a week (closed Sundays during the summer months), including several evenings.  Library cards are free for town residents.  Trained professionals are available to help customers in-house.  In addition, the library’s web site (www.brookfieldlibrary.org) offers round-the-clock online information assistance and a wealth of resources for users of all ages.   The library houses a collection of nearly 63,000 items in several formats: books in regular and large print, books on audio tape and CD, a wide selection of popular and informational videos and DVDs, and over a hundred subscriptions to magazines and newspapers.  Access to materials from other libraries is made possible through an inter-library loan system.  A variety of programs is offered throughout the year, including: indoor and outdoor concerts, lectures, book discussions, displays and workshops of community-wide interest.  Children's programming features story times for preschoolers, an annual summer reading program, theatre workshops, and special events for families. Also available: fax service, a self-service photocopier, and free notary service.

The Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut occupies a twenty-one acre site in Brookfield. A 37,000 sq. ft. complex opened in the fall of 1988 and features: two swimming pools (including a special therapeutic pool for the elderly and disabled, and infant water safety programs), a gymnasium with indoor running track, two racquet ball courts, shower and dressing rooms, a wellness center with nautilus and related exercise equipment, and two health centers with sauna, jacuzzi, steamroom and private locker facilities. The "Y" also offers an all-day child care program with extend hours for working parents.

Candlewood Lake, which borders Brookfield on the west, is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and scenic lakes in the East. 18 miles long with approximately 85 miles of shoreline, the lake is home to numerous marinas, private and community operated beaches. Brookfield, along with other lake communities, participates in the environmental management and safety of the lake through the Candlewood Lake Authority. Lake Lillinonah, bordering Brookfield on the east, has two state-maintained launching ramps and facilities for boating, fishing, picnicking and other recreational activities.
