Jan Howard Former Editor of the Brookfield Journal has a few stories

It is rare that a small town offers such diversity.

Brookfield could be divided into four distinct areas, each with a character of its own. The eastern portion of town bordering Lake Lillinonah, is known as the Historic District. It features colonial architecture and large lots, the majority of which are 1 - 5 acres.

The western side of town caresses the shores of Candlewood Lake. A majority of these homes were built in the 40's as summer cottages and over the years have been remodeled and updated to provide year round living. Ranch style homes are very popular on this side of town and typical lot sizes range from .25 - .5 acres. It is not uncommon for waterfront properties on either side of town to exceed $2,000,000. Non-waterfront property on the Candlewood side range from $255,000-$850,000. Non- waterfront properties on the Lillinonah side range from $375,000-$1,500,000.

The center of town is divided by Route 7 and the Still River Valley. This area has developed into the Central Business District.

DiGrazia Vineyards

The southern tip of Brookfield borders Danbury and some people call it the Million Dollar Mile. It is home to many national franchises, i.e. Pizza Hut, Wendy's, Burger King, McDonald's, and superstores such as Costco, Bob's discount furniture, Officemax, T.J. Maxx, Shop-Rite, and Kohls's.

By contrast the northern half of town is home to many local professionals, restaurants, and retailers, including The Brookfield Market, Brookfield Hardware, Brookfield Pharmacy, Brookfield Information Center, and The Brookfield Craft Center. DiGrazia Vineyards is located off Rt. 133. Much of the old New England style architecture is still apparent and the Economic Development Committee is working hard to restore a New England Village theme to the area.

Brookfield’s industrial property is still mostly undeveloped and will probably provide the largest area of growth in the next decade. An extensive list of area businesses and services can be found in the business and services directory.

Geographical Location

Brookfield is located in Fairfield County Connecticut on Route 25 and U.S. Route 7, eight miles north of Danbury. It is bordered on the west by the towns of Danbury and New Fairfield, on the north by New Milford and Bridgewater, on the southeast by Newtown, and on the south by Bethel.

Area
Brookfield has an area of 20.3 square miles.

The Villiage StoreAltitude and Topography
The Altitude varies between 230 and 720 feet above sea level. Which is apparently very good for growing grapes, DiGrazia Vineyards has become an area attraction the town can be proud of. The topography is generally hilly except in the area adjacent to the Still River which flows northward through the town. Principal topographic features include Lake Lillinonah which forms the boundary between Brookfield and Bridgewater, the Still River valley and the eastern shoreline of Lake Candlewood. Complete topographic coverage of Brookfield is provided by the Danbury, New Milford, and Newtown quadrangles mapped by the United States Geological Survey.

Climate

Average annual precipitation is 43 inches.

History
Brookfield was founded in 1788. For almost two hundred years it remained a quiet New England farm community, until the 1960s when it became one of the fastest growing towns in Fairfield County. Proper planning and zoning have guided an orderly development while maintaining a traditional New England Atmosphere.
